BCI Certificate Exam

We wish to clarify the relationship between the BCI's five training modules and the BCI Certificate Examination.

Though both the BCI Training Modules and the BCI Certificate Exam are based on the BCI's Good Practice Guidelines (GPG), the BCI Training modules were designed as a basic grounding in Business Continuity Management and not as specific preparation for the Exam.

The training modules teach knowledge of the GPG and are not a crash course on how to pass the Exam However, should the delegate wish to sit the Certificate Exam after the course, he or she may do so, if there is availability, but the Exam may be taken without the training modules and the training may be taken without the Exam.

For delegates who do wish to take the Exam, Continuity Shop will provide a short optional session at the end of each module. Such sessions are not a part of the course, but a supplement provided exclusively by Continuity Shop as an added benefit. Such sessions will highlight key points in the GPG and will give delegates a chance to see mock questions based on the GPG prepared by Continuity Shop.

Neither the BCI nor Continuity Shop can guarantee that any delegate or examination candidate will pass the Exam as this is entirely dependent on individual performance and the candidate's knowledge of the GPG. Success in the BCI Certificate examination leads to a credible recognition of achievement - the post nominal credential of CBCI which successful candidates can use to apply for professional membership of the BCI.

A final note about the course: it is gives a basic grounding in BCM. It is not an advanced course. If you are an experienced practitioner, the modules may teach you little new information, but they may help you to put what you have learnt into a structure. Please remember that the Examination will test understanding and knowledge of the Good Practice Guidelines - it will not test how candidates carry out BCM in their own organisation.

N.B. The current Exam and course content is based on Good Practice Guidelines 2007. The GPG have been updated (with some minor changes) in 2008. Revisions to training materials and the Exam are being made by the BCI but these will not be finalised before we next run the course. For the time being, you should therefore use the 2007 GPG in preparation for both the exam and training modules. Copies of this are available on request from Continuity Shop. The 2008 GPG is available to download, free of charge, from the BCI website at www.thebci.org/gpgdownloadpage.htm
